Product information
Composition
| Sulphacetamide sodium | 100 mg |
| Prednisolone acetate | 2 mg |
| Phenylephrine HCl | 1.2 mg with HPMC |
Action / Mechanism of Action
Sulphacetamide sodium at a 10% concentration is a bacteriostatic agent that is active against a broad range of pathogens, including staphylococci. The prednisolone component helps counter the allergic and inflammatory manifestations of blepharitis. Phenylephrine helps constrict engorged blood vessels in the eye and eyelid.
Indications / Uses
Indications include non-purulent blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis (seborrhoeic, staphylococcal, or allergic), as well as non-purulent conjunctivitis (allergic or bacterial). A steroid/anti-infective combination is indicated for ocular inflammation when the concurrent use of an antimicrobial is judged necessary.
Dosage and Administration
Instill one to two drops three to four times daily, depending on the severity of the condition.
During the early or acute stages of blepharitis, Cetapred may be instilled directly into the eye, with any excess spread onto the eyelid. When the condition is confined to the eyelid, Cetapred may be applied directly to the affected area.
Contraindications
Cetapred is contraindicated in cases of acute herpes simplex (dendritic keratitis), untreated purulent infections, vaccinia, varicella, most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, ocular tuberculosis, fungal diseases of the eye, or hypersensitivity to any component.
Warnings
- In diseases caused by microorganisms, infection may be masked, enhanced, or activated by steroids.
- Extended use may increase intraocular pressure in susceptible individuals. Intraocular pressure should be checked frequently.
- Various ocular diseases and the long-term use of topical corticosteroids may cause corneal and scleral thinning. The use of topical corticosteroids when corneal or scleral tissue is thin may lead to perforation.
- Use with caution in patients with known or suspected sensitivity to sulfonamides. Discontinue the medication if sensitivity or another unwanted reaction occurs.
- Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma.
- Prolonged use may suppress the host immune response to ocular infection.
- The use of corticosteroids in patients with a history of herpes simplex requires great caution.
- A significant percentage of staphylococcal isolates is resistant to sulfonamides.
